3725

3725
2012|2016 Catania

___

3725, a commission code, becomes the number of a mysterious door, the way into a journey through a unique and fascinating world. Alberto Castro’s work is beguiling. It presents an optical inversion, a non-place that becomes a place. With deft insight that requires a combination of imagination and thought, he “transfigures” a “construction site”, an operation both subtractive and synthetic, in order to clothe it in a new guise: he elevates it to museum.
Spaces and objects which only moments before were quivering with life now present themselves as empty, solitary; slowly, stillness falls, and with it a sense of humility. By means of continuous metamorphoses, Castro pursues visions and perspectives which freely reference a multitude of distinctive elements in contemporary art, from American Abstract Expressionism to Color Field, from Italian Arte Segnica to Basquatian stylizations, and moving on to Fontana’s lacerations, the Cretti of Alberto Burri, and finally leaping towards Dadaistic irreverence and Picassian cubism.
In this transformation game, we experience enchantment; just like Alice, we find ourselves in a perfect Wonderland, disorientated but at the same time excited by this secret new world. Slowly advancing through silent particularities, we have a sense of becoming imbued with them. All our perception of time fades. As we wait, composed and respectful, we immediately sense the need to research and explore, to read and re-read traces and details, let them come to us so that we can embrace them as a not-to-be -thrown-away opportunity to experience beauty.
